Chess is a strategy game played by millions of people worldwide. It is believed to be derived from the Indian game Chaturanga sometime before the 7th century. Chaturanga is also the likely ancestor of the Eastern strategy games Xianggi (Chinese chess), Janggi (Korean chess), and Shogi (Japanese chess). Chess reached Europe by the 9th century, due to the Umayyad Conquest of Hispania. The pieces assumed their current powers in Spain in the late 15th century; the modern rules were standardized in the 19th century.
Each and every board is made to order and will take from 4 to 6 weeks to complete. It is well worth the wait to get a handmade board created especially for you.
The woods that I use in my Chess Boards come from a local saw mill run by the coolest guy ever. I purchase the boards from Mike and then process the boards from rough cut to the beautiful boards I offer to the customer. I examine each and every wood plank looking for great figuring in the wood grain that will translate to a stunning board.
WOOD CHOICES ARE ANIGRE, CHERRY, MAHOGANY AND MAPLE.
ANIGRE – is a light colored wood that slightly darker than Maple and lasers in a dark rich tone.
CHERRY – is darker than Anigre and lasers in a dark color. Cherry can have variations in the wood due to the different grains, and the different grains can be in the same piece of wood.
MAHOGANY – is a very dark wood and lasers in an almost black color.
MAPLE – is a very light colored wood and lasers in a light brown.
I have to admit, even though Anigre is not well known, it is one of my favorites due to the rich tone of the laser design which seems to pop off the board.
Please be aware that every chess board is handmade and each board will be slightly different and unique.
The finished board is 12 inches square an approximately 1 inch thick. It comes with a duck canvas storage bag and wooden chess pieces stored in their own bag.
These boards can be customized to you likes and specifications. Some of my customers enjoy a friendly rivalry such as beer against coffee as shown below.
